Capital of the Republic of Dagestan

Makhachkala is the largest city in the North Caucasus Federal District. It is the capital of the federation subject with the most multi-ethnic population. There are more than 60 nationalities residing in Dagestan.

Founded as the Russian stronghold in the Caucasus. The city developed as a port on the Caspian Sea and a fishing center. Today, in addition to fishing, timber processing, electronics and food industries are operating out of the Dagestani capital. The city has five universities and the Dagestan Scientific Center RAS. There are plans to build the "Riviera" resort center near Makhachkala.

In Makhachkala, as elsewhere in the North Caucasus, sports are loved and appreciated. The Dagestani school of wrestling is well known. There is a monument In Makhachkala to a local wrestler, five time world champion, Ali Aliyev. "Anji," a popular football team in Dagestan, has seen its fame recently to cross the borders of Russia.

Interesting Facts

The original Russian city name was Petrovskoye or Port Petrovsk. It was named in honor of Peter the Great, who had allegedly stopped on the site of the present Makhachkala during the Persian campaign 130 years before the Russian settlement was found here.

Petrovsk was renamed to Makhachkala in 1921. Previously, there was a fortress on this site, called Anzhi-Kala, which means "pearly hail" in Kumyk language.

It is believed that, in the 7th century Samandar, the capital of the Khazar kingdom, stood on the site of the city of Makhachkala.

On Day 112 of its journey, the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay again returned to the territory of the North Caucasus Federal District. For the previous several days, the Olympic torchbearers were welcomed by residents of Stavropol and Pyatigorsk, and then the Torch Relay went through Elista and Astrakhan.
